CELEBRATING DIFFERENCES

Cultivating a space that was sensory friendly for families is something that really hits home for me. My youngest, Thomas, was diagnosed with Autism at just 19 months old. Being a photographer I spent so much of my time documenting my children's lives that I really realized the importance of creating a safe and supportive space for all families.

  1. Consultation - We can do this by phone, zoom, or even a questionnaire. I want to know all about your child; how they communicate, what can be overstimulating, what do they really love, etc.
  2. Location and Time - I want to make sure we have a safe and supportive space for your session. If we choose outdoors, then what do we need to avoid such as dogs, bodies of water, or even if we need to make sure we are in a fenced in area. If you choose a studio session then I will adjust the studio to your needs. All lighting will be dimmed or off, and I will only use natural lighting with diffusers available if they are needed. We will also choose a time for our session. We will select a time that isn’t disruptive of their normal routine, to help prevent disregulation.
  3. Storyboard - I will email over a storyboard for you and your child to review every day before their session. This includes a photo of me, and step by step what we will do in the studio for their portraits. I also have this in the studio, as well as a mobile version for outdoor sessions. I also keep a This/Then board with the steps of a photo shoot to help with transitions during our session.
  4. Disregulation - I understand that disregulation can lead to a meltdown or a child shutting off for a while. During these moments as will directly as you what you need from me. I can leave the room, I can walk away for a while, or I can even sit down and pull out my box of toys/sensory items so the child can regulate while getting more comfortable with me. No one knows better than you, so I will always follow your lead (while being supportive of you because as a parent, I get it).
  5. Length of Session- I never want you to feel rushed, so I do not book any sessions to directly follow a sensory session. I want you to have all the tools and time you need to curate the best photography experience for your family. You deserve for this to be an amazing experience, and sometimes that takes a little extra time to get adjusted to the space and my camera. It can be slightly intimidating for a child on the spectrum, especially if they haven’t previously done this before.

These sessions are curated just for your family, and your needs. I go into these sessions with my whole heart filled with love and compassion. I am here to support you and the highest needs of your family.
